At least six people were killed and over 100 others, including women and children, were abducted when armed men attacked Kairu community in Zamfara State, northwest Nigeria, on Friday, July 18.
The attackers, identified as part of the armed gangs commonly referred to as bandits, invaded the village at around 10:40 am shooting indiscriminately and causing widespread panic.
One resident, Abubakar Isa, said his wife was among those taken during the assault.
Confirming the incident, local lawmaker Hamisu Faru stated that no fewer than 100 people were kidnapped during the raid.
Zamfara has long been a hotspot for bandit violence, with criminal groups carrying out mass abductions, killings, and raids that have severely disrupted daily life and made farming and road travel dangerous in many parts of the state.
“As I’m speaking to you right now, they are searching house-to-house, abducting people,” Faru said.
Mohammed Usman, another resident, recounted that the attackers held the village under siege for almost two hours before abducting their victims.
He added that in the aftermath of the assault, thousands of residents have fled the community in fear for their lives.
