Bandits who abducted a 21-year-old lady along with others on the Tapila-Gwada route in Shiroro LGA, Niger state, have threatened to marry her off.

The gunmen attacked the town, which is close to Minna, Niger’s capital city, on the evening of Saturday April 16th, according to The Cable.

The thieves initially sought N2 million in ransom, but after meeting with the girl’s parents on Tuesday night, they reduced their demand to N1.7 million.

They demanded that the abducted girl’s parents pay N1 million in cash and purchase a motorcycle for them for N750,000.

The woman’s aunt, Theresa, said, “These people are asking for N1 million ransom, buy a bike worth about 750,000 and pay the person that would come to collect the cash, or else they would marry her off to one of them.

“For over an hour they were on the phone and my brother was begging them, he was crying.”

Wasiu Abiodun, spokesman for the state’s police command who reacted on the attack, claimed they were able to repel the onslaught and return the village to normalcy.

“However, details of the incident are still sketchy while reinforcement has been dispatched to Gwada and normalcy has been restored,” Abiodun stated.
