The suspended Minister of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Alleviation, Betta Edu, has been mandated to report at the headquarters of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, in Abuja on Tuesday, January 9.
Recall that the President, Bola Tinubu suspended Betta Edu on Monday, January 8, over alleged N585 million scandal.
The President had on Sunday, January 7, demanded a thorough probe of the Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Alleviation headed by Betta Edu.
The Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris while making this known in a statement on the same Sunday said, the government is determined to unravel the truth as it relates to this matter, and assures that appropriate action will be taken to ensure that any breaches and infractions are identified and decisively punished, in line with the Administration’s commitment to public accountability and due process.
According to a top source in the anti-graft agency, the embattled minister has now been invited by the anti-graft agency in compliance with the President’s order that a comprehensive investigation encompassing her activities in the ministry be carried out.
A senior EFCC official, confirming the development, said, “Betta Edu has been mandated to report to the commission tomorrow.”
Betta Edu’s predecessor, Sadiya Farouq, is also being questioned by EFCC interrogators over allegations that she laundered N37.1 billion while serving as a minister in former President Muhammadu Buhari’s cabinet.
