A bomb explosion struck the Bassa community in Shiroro Local Government Area of Niger State on the morning of Wednesday, December 18, claiming one life and leaving four others injured.
The victims were on their way to their farms when the incident occurred. Among the injured, three sustained severe injuries, including shattered legs, and are currently receiving medical care at a government hospital.
Ahmed Almustapha, a resident of the area, confirmed the tragic event and voiced concerns about the increasing fear and anxiety gripping the community.
“Residents are now living in fear due to this ugly incident. Some are contemplating staying, while others have already fled to avoid potential future attacks,” Almustapha said.
“Tragically, three of the injured victims are siblings, and they are my sister’s children. This incident is even more worrisome because it is the second explosion in Bassa this month. Two weeks ago, a similar explosion claimed another life.”
He urged the federal and state governments to enhance security measures in the region to enable residents to safely return to their farms and harvest their crops without fear.
Meanwhile, Mohammed Bello Abdullahi, the Niger State Commissioner for Homeland Security, confirmed the explosion.
He speculated that the incident could be connected to the remnants of bandit activities in the area, which had been disrupted by recent military operations.
“The explosion could be an aftereffect of the activities of bandits who previously terrorized the area. We urge residents to remain calm as the ministry and security agencies are on top of the situation. Detailed findings from the investigation will be made public once concluded,” Abdullahi stated.
The incident has plunged the community into a state of distress, prompting urgent appeals for swift action to safeguard the lives and security of its residents.
