Stephanie Orkuma, known as “The Dada Designer,” is making waves in the niche of UX Strategy. With only a few years of experience under her belt, Stephanie’s journey is not just a story of rapid ascent but a testament to the power of building a personal brand and seizing opportunities. The Humble Beginnings on Canva Stephanie’s design journey started on the popular graphic design platform, Canva. In 2020, she balanced her small business and worked for her brother’s foundation, creating social media designs. Her early designs, while humble, ignited a passion that was impossible to ignore. “I was in school at the time, and whenever I returned from class bored, I’d just get on my phone and start designing,” she shared. Her journey took an unexpected turn when she came across a tweet from Orifunke Lawal, a Nigerian digital entrepreneur who ran a Canva training academy. The tweet highlighted the transition of her students from graphic design to UI/UX design. Stephanie saw a path to turn her passion into a tech career. Stephanie was simultaneously pursuing her Linguistics degree at Nasarawa State University while juggling internships and her passion for design. She immersed herself in the design community on Twitter, following designers and seeking mentorship programs. When she applied for a UX mentorship program led by Raheemat Atata, a Nigerian product designer, things started moving in the right direction. Stephanie’s dedication and support network paved the way for her journey into UX design. Stephanie’s personal brand played a pivotal role in her career. She embraced the advice to share her work on social media, leveraging algorithms and keywords to boost visibility. This approach quickly attracted the attention of a Canadian startup founder, opening the door to job opportunities and speaking engagements. Pioneering UX Strategy in Nigeria One of Stephanie’s defining contributions to the field is her commitment to UX Strategy. She was among the first in her region to incorporate “UX Strategy” into her profile. Her dedication inspired others to do the same, leading to greater awareness and understanding of UX Strategy in Nigeria. Stephanie’s journey wasn’t without challenges. One significant hurdle was the lack of live projects in her portfolio, which she overcame by becoming selective about the projects she took on. She navigated Nigeria’s challenges, including power outages and slow internet speeds.
