The Edo State Governor, Godwin Obaseki has officially joined the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
This is coming after he dumped the All Progressives Congress on Tuesday.
Obaseki picked up his PDP membership card at the party’s secretariat in Benin City, the state capital today.
It would be recalled that after his resignation from the APC, he proceeded to visit the Rivers State Governor, Nyesom Wike and his Akwa-Ibom State counterpart, Udom Emmanuel.
Exactly a week ago, Obaseki was screened out and declared unfit to participate in the APC primary election ahead of the September 19 governorship poll in Edo State.
The Screening Committee led by Professor Jonathan Ayuba submitted a report to the party’s leadership after screening Governor Obaseki, Pastor Osagie Ize-Iyamu, Dr Pius Odubu, Chris Ogiemwonyi, Osaro Obazee, and Matthew Iduoriyekemwen.
Presenting the committee’s report, Prof. Ayuba informed the APC leadership, and that Governor Obaseki and two others were screened out, however, Ize-Iyamu and two other aspirants were cleared to participate in the primaries.
He further explained that Governor Obaseki was disqualified on the grounds that his HSC and National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) certificates were “defective”.
Criticism by many individuals and groups followed the disqualification of the governor. They alleged that it could be a fallout of the lingering dispute between him and his predecessor, Oshiomhole.
The governor’s spokesman, Crusoe Osagie, described the screening exercise as a mockery of the democratic process, adding that the governor had asserted that there was no way he would get a fair assessment in the run-up to the nomination of the party’s flagbearer in the election.
