A two-storey building under construction, on Monday, November 4, collapsed in the Egbelu Mgbaraja area of Ogbogoro Community, Obio/Akpor Local Government Area of Rivers State resulting in one fatality and leaving another person critically injured.
The incident, which took place around 2 p.m. marks the second building collapse in the area in less than a week.
According to an eyewitness, the building collapsed while construction workers were on the second floor, tragically resulting in the death of a young man, identified only as Udeme, from Akwa Ibom State.
“When we arrived, it was clear that substandard materials had been used in the construction. The foundation was designed for a two-storey building, yet poor-quality rods and insufficient cement were employed.
“Additionally, the decking lacked a central pillar and beam, which ultimately caused the collapse,” the eyewitness explained.
In response, Evans Bipi, the Rivers State Commissioner for Physical Planning and Urban Development, visited the site, ordered it to be sealed, and declared the developer a wanted person.
Bipi condemned the developer’s negligence, stating that the construction was carried out without the necessary government approval and with the use of substandard materials.
“We have made it clear that anyone who constructs without proper approval will face the consequences,” he said.
“This site has been sealed, and the developer is now wanted. He must be held accountable for using substandard materials that resulted in the loss of life.”
Bipi further warned that the government would take decisive action, stating, “This is unacceptable. We will make an example of him.”
In a statement issued by his media aide, Emeka Idika Kalu, Bipi extended his condolences to the victim’s family, adding that the body would be kept at a mortuary, with the location to be made public for the family’s access.
Bipi emphasized, “This incident should serve as a warning to anyone constructing without government approval.”
Samuel Anya, the Rivers State Commissioner for Special Duties, also voiced his disapproval of the incident, condemning the developer for prioritizing profit over safety.
“This is deeply distressing. The building was not only of poor quality, but it also lacked the necessary approval. Sadly, someone has lost their life as a result.
“The owner and engineer responsible must be held accountable, as the government is committed to prioritizing the safety of lives.”
