No fewer than thirty-one persons have lost their lives in Mali following an incident on Tuesday, February 27, as a bus enroute to Burkina Faso veered off a bridge in the country’s southeast.
The Transport Ministry confirmed that the accident occurred around 5:00 pm (1700 GMT) at a bridge spanning the Bagoe River.
The ministry stated, “A bus departing from Kenieba commune towards Burkina Faso overturned from a bridge. The likely cause is attributed to the driver losing control of the vehicle.”
Among the victims were nationals of Mali as well as citizens from other West African countries.
Mali has witnessed a string of such accidents, attributable to the poor conditions of roads and vehicles.
In a separate incident on January 24, fifteen people lost their lives and forty-six others were injured when a bus collided with a truck in central Mali while heading towards the capital, Bamako.
Meanwhile, in Vietnam, three individuals died and numerous others sustained injuries in a separate bus accident.
The incident, which occurred in the early hours of Tuesday, involved a sleeper bus that plunged off a cliff on a highway section passing through Danang city.
The sleeper bus, carrying nineteen passengers along with three drivers and assistants, was traveling on the Dak Lak-Thua Thien Hue route when it crashed into a road barrier during cold and heavy rainfall conditions.
The bus subsequently slid off the cliff, resulting in the deaths of three passengers and severe injuries to three others.
Local authorities reported that the accident happened on a road with no median, situated outside heavily populated areas.
However, the damaged bus necessitated the urgent transfer of injured victims to nearby healthcare facilities.
