At least seven people have drowned after a canoe capsized in Gidan Hussaini area of Sokoto state.
Security expert, Zagazola Makama confirmed that the incident occured on Monday, June 2 while the passengers where travelling from Gidan Hussaini to Sabon Garin Hussaini, Sokoto.
Makama noted that security personnel arrived swiftly at the scene, securing the area and limiting access to the riverbank as family members began to gather.
He also mentioned that a local rescue team was deployed to recover the bodies, which were later handed over to the families for burial.
In a similar incident that occured on Saturday, November 30, 2024 a boat carrying more than 200 passengers from Kogi State capsized in the Dambo-Ebuchi area of the River Niger, over 22 bodies were recovered, and many passengers remain missing.
