Kebbi state high Court has sentenced Muhammed Sani Nuhu, a former academic staff member of Waziri Umaru Federal Polytechnic to five years imprisonment for deviously allotting over N6 million belonging to the polytechnic to himself.
This took place after the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission secured his conviction.
The Commission Spokesperson, Azuka Ogugua, stated on Tuesday that, in a four count charge brought before Hon. Justice Hassan Usman of the Kebbi State High Court, Birnin Kebbi Judicial Division, Nuhu, took a corrupt advantage, when he converted into personal use the sums of two million Naira (N2,000,000:00) in 2015 and four million, one hundred and seventy-three thousand, four hundred Naira (N4,173,400:00) in 2016.
Both the money for Nuhu’s international conference attendance in Aberdeen, United Kingdom, and the first installment of payment advanced to him for the Doctor of Philosophy program at the University of Technology Malaysia came from special grants made available to him by the polytechnic, where he was a dismissed academic staff member.
In charge No. KB/HC/4C/2020, the ICPC’s attorney, Mashkur Salisu, testified in court during a two-year trial that the defendant refused to enroll in the program and instead converted the funds for his own use.
He committed an offense that is prohibited by Section 19 of the Corrupt Practises and Other Related Offenses Act of 2000, Section 311 of the Penal Code, and Section 312 of the Penal Code Law (Cap 89) Laws of Northern Nigeria, 1963.
The trial judge found the former poly lecturer responsible for counts one through three and dismissed charge number four.
Justice Usman sentenced him to five years in prison on each of the three counts in his decision.
The court also ruled that the convict paid the Federal Government N6.5 million in restitution, which was the proceeds of his crime and the sentences must flow together.
