The grand merger of opposition parties in Nigeria into one mega-party received a boost on Saturday as two political parties, the Congress for Progressive Change (CPC) and the All Nigeria Peoples Party (ANPP) formally fused into the All Progressives Congress. The Action Congress of Nigeria had adopted the new party’s logo and manifesto earlier.
The CPC and ANPP made the move in their separate conventions held in Abuja and Gusau respectively. Speaking at the CPC convention, the party’s leader and presidential candidate in the 2011 elections, Gen Muhammadu Buhari (rtd) said “we must explore all opportunities to save our country. We have to change Nigeria for the better and stop the endless drift that has been going on for 14 years the PDP has been in power.”
Buhari also berated the Goodluck Jonathan administration for failing to secure the country.
The CPC was officially dissolved after a motion to that effect had been moved by Pastor Tunde Bakare and seconded by the party’s legal adviser, Malami Abubakar. The motion for the CPC’s incorporation into APC was moved by Yahaya Ahman and seconded by Oscar Udoji and was thereafter adopted.
It is widely believed that the mega party stands a better chance against the ruling PDP than the regional parties that existed before the merger.
