A student of Rufus Giwa polytechnic, identified as Peter, was shot dead by cultists on Sunday, December 14, in Opomulero area, Owo, Ondo state.
According to an eyewitness, the cultists stormed Peter’s residence in the evening while searching for members of a rival cult group.
They lured him out under the guise of being visitors before shooting him at point-blank range.
Peter was rushed to a nearby hospital but could not be saved.
It was also disclosed that Peter had recently lost his mother three weeks before the incident, compounding the tragedy for his family.
The violence was said to have stemmed from an altercation last Thursday during a birthday celebration by members of the Eiye confraternity.
The clash began when an Eiye leader ordered the assault of a female student, leading to a confrontation with members of the Buccaneers confraternity present at the scene.
Following the incident, the Buccaneers confraternity retaliated by attacking some Eiye members, destroying their phones.
Peter was reportedly shot dead as part of a reprisal attack by the Eiye confraternity.
