The Nigeria Customs Service, Oyo/Osun Area Command, indicated that it generated a total of N71,292,530,398.17 as revenue into the coffers of the Federal Government in year 2023.
This was announced by the Customs Area Comptroller in the Area Command, Dr Ben Oramalugo.
He said personnel of the Command intercepted contraband with a Duty Paid Value of N454,235,559 for the year 2023, adding that it also seized contrabands valued at N30,464,500 between January 1 and January 18, 2024.
The Customs chief made the disclosure at a press conference held on Friday at its Area Command in Ibadan, the Oyo State capital.
Oramalugo, who said a truckload of timber was seized by the Command, explained that exportation of raw wood remained illegal in Nigeria.
“The Export Provision List No.4 stipulated that it is illegal to export raw wood, and the government has put that in place to protect our furniture industry. But you still found out that some unscrupulous elements still export this thing to the detriment of the Nigerian state.
“Other seizures made by the command in the 2023 fiscal year and the period 1st -18 January 2024, according to Oramalugo, included 12 sacks and four wraps of Cannabis Sativa with DPV of N1,699,740.00; 11,850 litres(474 kegs of 25 litre) of premium motor spirit (PMS); 114 bales and two sacks of used clothing with N41,160,000.00 DPV; 194 (50 kg bags) of foreign parboiled rice with DPV N8,393,000.00, 100 pieces of timber with DPV of N7,700,000, among other seizures,” he said.
The Customs area Controller lauded the Comptroller General of Customs, B.A. Adeniyi, and his management team for supporting the Command.
He also thanked Governor Seyi Makinde for the support granted, particularly for his recent donation of a Kia Rio vehicle to the Command.
As well, he thanked the traditional rulers and other sister security agencies like the Nigerian Army, the NDLEA, the Nigeria Police Force, the Department of State Services, the Oyo State Operation Burst, and Amotekun, among others for collaborating with Customs.
Oramalugo said, “We would like to use this opportunity to implore all patriotic residents of Oyo and Osun states as well as members of the general public to provide the command with useful information that could be used to apprehend economic saboteurs in their environment in order to rid our society of all individuals with such nefarious intentions.”
The Customs condoled Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State and the families of those who lost their loved ones in the Tuesday explosion in Ibadan.
