The nominations for the 66th Grammy Awards were released on Friday and Nigerian stars shone in various categories.
Grammy-award winner, Damini Ogulu aka Burna Boy, bagged four nominations while David Adeleke aka Davido bagged three nominations. These marked his first Grammy nominations.
Ahmed Ololade aka Asake, Olamide Adedeji and Oyinkansola Sarah Aderibigbe aka Arya Starr also made their Grammy nomination debut with one nomination each, according to the list published on Grammy Awards website.
Asake and Olamide’s ‘Amapiano’, Burna Boy’s ‘City Boys’, Ayra Starr’s ‘Rush’, Davido and Musa Keys’ ‘Unavailable’, and Tyla’s ‘Water’ were the nominees in a newly created category, Best African Music Performance.
Burna Boy’s other nominations include; ‘Sitting On Top of the World’ featuring 21 Savage for Best Melodic Rap, ‘I Told Them’ for Best Global Music Album, and ‘Alone’ for Best Global Music Performance.
Davido’s other nominations include Timeless’ for Best Global Music Album, and ‘Feel’ for Best Global Music Performance.
The 66th Grammy will be held on February 4, 2024 at the Crypto.com Arena in Los Angeles.
Earlier this year, Temilade Openiyi popularly known as Tems, won her first Grammy Award for her performance in American rapper Future’s single, Wait For You where she was featured alongside Canadian singer, Drake.
The song won the “Best Melodic Rap Performance’ category in the ongoing 65th edition of the world’s biggest music award show.
However, Burna Boy who bagged a nomination failed to win in his categories.
He had been nominated in the ‘Best Global Music Album’ and the ‘Best Global Music Performance’ categories.
South Africa’s Wouter Kellerman, Zakes Bantwini & Nomcebo Zikode defeated Burna Boy’s Last Last to claim the award for the Best Global Music performance while Japan’s Masa Takumi edged his album, Love Damini to win the Best Global Album category.
