The Democratic party is reportedly considering replacing President Joe Biden as its presumptive nominee ahead of the national convention in August.
Biden sparred with former US President Donald Trump, the presumptive Republican nominee in a debate hosted on Friday June 28.
During the debate, Biden’s speech was occasionally slurred and throaty, with moments of incoherence and stuttering, resulting in responses that appeared weak.
At one point, during the debate the candidates’ discussion on border closure and immigration, Trump said “I really don’t understand what he said at the end of that sentence. I don’t think he knows what he said either.”
Assessing the performances of both candidates afterward, some of the panelists agreed that Biden had not done himself any favors this night.
Other panelists noted Biden’s vulnerability, his shaky voice and expressed concerns among Democrats that keeping Biden at the top of the ticket could jeopardize their chances of winning the presidency.
Biden, aged 81 and Trump, aged 78, engaged in heated exchanges over various topics including the Russia-Ukraine war, Israel’s actions in Gaza, treatment of veterans, abortion, taxes, Medicare, inflation, Afghanistan and America’s global standing.
Throughout the debate, the Republican consistently put the Democrat on the defensive.
Trump served as US president from 2017 to 2021. Following his defeat in the re-election bid against Biden, he contested the outcome of the vote in an unprecedented manner.
His supporters infamously stormed the US Capitol building in January, 6 2021, while Trump continued to assert that the election had been stolen from him.
