The DSS apprehended an inmate described as “a slim young man” following a major operation at the Kirikiri prison in Apapa, Lagos.
It was reported last week that a large number of officers stormed the penitentiary in search of the man who was threatening one of Vice President Yemi Osinbajo’s daughters.
It was learnt, on Monday night, that the VP’s second daughter Kiki, an entrepreneur, was the target of “a serious threat to life”.
The extent of the damage is still unknown, as the secret service has remained silent.
DSS agents arrived at the prison on March 12 and completed the mission after a 72-hour presence in which staff and visitors were subjected to additional scrutiny before entry or exit.
According to reports, a unit of operatives moved around the premises in a Communication Command Vehicle while the rest remained outside.
According to sources, the operatives succeeded in locating the culprit after days of tactics and intelligence gathering that included questioning the suspect’s father.
“They stayed until the operation was finished.
The headquarters gave the order to find the person(s) responsible for the threat by any means necessary.
“The phone used was under surveillance; he was eventually found at the Medium Security Prison last Tuesday or Wednesday.
Previously, the agents had moved from cell to cell,” one of them explained.
Following the departure of the DSS, the Nigerian Correctional Service, NCoS, dispatched a special team to the prison on Thursday.
The “external officers” allegedly searched different cells for hours, confiscating sim cards, undeclared cash, phones, and other prohibited items.
“A reorganization is expected. What happened will almost certainly result in some personnel being transferred out of Kirikiri,” a prison officer hinted.
According to NCoS Public Relations Officer in Lagos, CS Rotimi Oladokun, there are approximately 353 inmates on death row at the jailhouse, while 210 are serving life sentences.
Those on death row committed murder, treason, armed robbery, kidnapping, assisting a child or lunatic in committing suicide, and fabricating evidence resulting in the death sentence of an innocent person, among other crimes.
Lagos has five detention facilities: Ikoyi, Badagry, Kirikiri Female, Kirikiri Medium, and Kirikiri Maximum. The Ikoyi prison, which was designed to house 800 inmates, now houses 2,400, according to Oladokun.
Kirikiri Maximum Correctional Centre, which has a capacity of 1,006 inmates, currently houses 2,100; Kirikiri Medium, which has a capacity of 5,930 inmates, houses fewer prisoners; and Kirikiri Female houses approximately 200 felons.
