The Department of State Services (DSS) on Monday, March 2nd, confirmed the arrest of a Rivers state–based teacher, Udeme Monday Stephen, for his role in an assassination attempt and death threats against former presidential candidate of Labour Party (LP), Peter Obi.
On February 24, Obi, alongside former Edo state governor, John Odigie-Oyegun, and several chieftains of the All Democratic Congress (ADC), were attacked by gunmen during a party meeting in Benin, Edo state.
Stephen, a teacher at Jessica High School in Eliozu, Rivers state, was tracked down using forensic analysis after he claimed responsibility for the attack on his X account and issued warnings of more violence to come.
“We warned Obi against his entrance into Edo state, but he mistook our resolve for his Obidiots online noise.
“Thank his stars he survived this one.
“I learnt he’s going to my Rivers state, na my men go handle that one and dem no dey miss target.
“Speak no peace to a bastard and wish him no long life, for he’s destined to die,” he wrote.
Following the social media post, the DSS launched a covert investigation, deploying forensic tools to trace and identify the individual behind the account.
The 26-year-old was eventually tracked to Umuehere community in Obio-Akpor local government area.
The DSS reaffirmed its commitment to Very Important Person (VIP) protection and counter-espionage irrespective of tribe or religion.
Stephen is currently in custody and will soon be charged to court.
