DSS rearrests El-Rufai shortly after release on bail from EFCC custody

Former Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai was taken into custody by operatives of the Department of State Services, DSS, shortly after regaining freedom on bail from the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC.

El-Rufai, who secured bail on Wednesday night, it was gathered, was apprehended by DSS personnel stationed outside the EFCC headquarters, where they had been waiting.

Sources indicated that the latest arrest is connected to claims that he illegally monitored the phone communications of the National Security Adviser, NSA, Nuhu Ribadu.

The former governor, now a leading figure in the African Democratic Congress, ADC, had earlier responded to an EFCC invitation on Monday, February 16, over alleged financial improprieties tied to his tenure in office.

He arrived at the anti-graft agency’s office in Abuja in the company of a large number of supporters.

The incident follows a previous episode at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport on February 12, where he avoided arrest.

After the airport encounter, El-Rufai publicly accused NSA Nuhu Ribadu of masterminding the attempted detention during media appearances.
