The Department of State Service (DSS) has cleared the air regarding the arrest and subsequent release of the presidential candidate of the African Action Congress (AAC) in the 2023 election, Omoyele Sowore, on Sunday.
The activist and politician was apprehended at the Murtala Mohammed Airport in Lagos upon his arrival from abroad on Sunday, detained briefly and released.
The DSS noted that the clarification became necessary because of reports that its operatives effected the arrest.
An official of the service explained on Sunday that they would carry out their duties legally if they have cause to arrest anyone.
“I had just arrived in Nigeria from the USA at MMIA in Lagos; upon reaching Nigerian Immigration, my passport was seized, and they told me they had orders to detain me,” Sowore wrote on X on Sunday.
A few hours later, Sowore, who has been held a few times by government over the years, revealed that he had been released by the Nigerian Immigration Service, who had previously seized his passport.
“I have just been released by the Nigerian Immigration after a brief detention and my passport released back to me,” he posted.
A DSS official said that the secret police are not on the trail of Sowore at the moment.
