The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) has declared a state of emergency in the region.
The announcement was made on Tuesday, December 9, by the president of the ECOWAS commission, Omar Touray, during the 55th session of the mediation and security council at the ministerial level in Abuja.
Touray emphasized that the declaration underscores the urgent need for serious reflection on the future of democracy in the region and the importance of investing in the security of the West African community.
The meeting was convened in response to a series of recent coups in Guinea-Bissau, Mali, Burkina Faso, and Niger, as well as attempted mutinies in Benin Republic and other parts of the sub-region.
