The Edo State Special Security Squad has taken two kidnappers into custody in the Egbai community of Ovia North-East Local Government Area.
A statement issued on Sunday by Governor Monday Okpebholo’s Chief Press Secretary, Fred Itua, revealed that officers also pulled down a building used as the criminals’ base of operations.
The arrests were carried out on Saturday, November 22, after what authorities described as a period of high-level, intelligence-driven surveillance.
Upon being paraded, the kidnappers admitted to participating in the abduction of one Blessing Nosa, whose release was secured after a ransom of ₦30 million was paid.
Their arrests followed another alleged abduction involving a local businessperson, during which they demanded ₦500 million. That incident prompted broader inter-agency tracking efforts that eventually led to their capture.
At the demolition site, the Coordinator of the Edo State Security Squad, Noah Idemudia, explained that the destruction of the hideout was in line with directives from the governor to pursue proactive security actions aimed at stopping crime before it escalates.
He emphasised that the state government maintains a firm stance against criminal activity.
“These individuals have been in this trade for some time, and it is deeply unfortunate. Let this serve as a clear warning: under Governor Okpebholo’s watch, Edo State is not a safe haven for kidnappers or any criminal elements,” he said.
Idemudia added that similar security operations would continue across the state as part of efforts to dismantle organised criminal groups.
Reacting to the development, the Okaighele (youth leader) of the Egbai community, Aghaku Ihanuwaze, expressed appreciation for what he called a courageous and long-overdue intervention. He said the area had long been troubled by criminal activity and welcomed the renewed sense of safety.
“This hideout has been a source of fear for our community. We thank Governor Okpebholo for acting swiftly and for prioritising the safety of our people,” he said.
Earlier this month, one person was severely injured during a clash involving rival cult groups in Uromi, Esan North-East LGA. Subsequent security operations resulted in the arrest of 31 suspects after coordinated raids.
Further raids were conducted on November 16 in locations including Osigbemhe Lane, Okhenlen-Uromi, Arue Street in Ivue-Uromi, and surrounding areas.
These efforts, according to the security squad, reflect the administration’s ongoing push to enhance safety and build public confidence throughout Edo State’s urban and rural communities.
