Former Speaker of the Ogun State House of Assembly, Olakunle Oluomo, has been arraigned alongside two key officers of the assembly, Dayo Samuel and Adeyemo Adedeji, before a Federal High Court in Abeokuta.
The charges, brought forth by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), allege the misappropriation of N2,500,000,000 in public funds during his tenure as the speaker in 2022.
The court session on Monday, January 29, revealed that the EFCC’s counsel was unable to attend, leading to an adjournment of the case to February 29 and March 1.
It may be recalled that Oluomo had faced impeachment when 18 out of 26 house members signed for his removal, citing various allegations such as highhandedness, gross misconduct, arrogance, poor leadership style, lack of focus and transparency, and causing discord among members.
Meanwhile, the trial of Chief Cletus Ibeto, Chairman of Ibeto Energy Development Company, has faced a setback at the Lagos High Court.
The case stalled as Justice Ismail Ijelu returned the case file to the Chief Judge of the court, Justice Kazeem Alogba.
The delay is attributed to ongoing petitions challenging the court’s jurisdiction and accusing the judge of bias.
However, the case has been adjourned indefinitely, awaiting the Chief Judge’s decision on the pending petitions.
He contested his removal by approaching the state high court.
In Ibeto’s case, the EFCC charged him with conspiracy, fraud, forgery, and fraudulent use of documents.
The trial has faced numerous delays, including the defendant’s failure to appear in court and recent attempts to seek a plea bargain arrangement.
