The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Kaduna zonal directorate, has arraigned a lawyer, Barrister Steve Adamu, before the Kaduna state high court on a one-count charge of false information peddling.
Adamu was brought before Justice Darius Khobo after investigators concluded that a petition he filed in 2022, accusing his landlord of suspicious wealth acquisition, was malicious and unsubstantiated.
Prosecutors told the court that the petition led the EFCC to open a full investigation based on claims the lawyer knew to be false.
This prompted the agency to charge Adamu for knowingly providing false information under section 16(1) of the EFCC act, 2004.
If convicted, he faces penalties under section 16(2) of the same act.
According to the charge sheet, Adamu had reported to the EFCC on September 15, 2022, alleging that his landlord possessed expensive cars and property without a legitimate source of income.
When the charge was read in court, Adamu pleaded not guilty.
Prosecution counsel, M.E. Eimonye, requested a trial date, while the defence team applied for bail.
Justice Khobo ordered that the defendant be remanded at the Nigerian correctional centre pending the hearing of his bail application.
The case was adjourned to December 20, 2025.
