Former Kwara State Governor, Abdulfatah Ahmed, is being interrogated by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) over alleged financial misconduct amounting to billions of naira during his tenure as governor of the state.
Ahmed’s arrival at the EFCC office in Ilorin on Monday, February 19, marked the beginning of a rigorous questioning session regarding the utilization of state funds during his eight-year governance, spanning from May 2011 to May 2019.
This recent encounter with the EFCC is not the first time Ahmed has faced scrutiny. In December 2020, he was apprehended by Nigerian authorities in connection with a financial fraud investigation, which also involved inquiries into his wife’s involvement.
The alleged fraud, reported to involve around N2,000,000,000 which raised significant concerns about financial mismanagement during his time in office.
Ahmed also underwent interrogation at the EFCC headquarters in Abuja in May 2021.
During this session, lasting several hours, investigators probed allegations of diverting approximately N9,000,000,000 naira from the coffers of the Kwara state government.
The focus of the inquiry extended to Ahmed’s tenure as governor, as well as his earlier role as Finance Commissioner in the administration of Bukola Saraki, further implicating him in financial irregularities spanning multiple administrations.
Meanwhile, the EFCC’s decision to detain Ahmed on May 17, 2021, for an extended period highlighted the seriousness of the allegations against him.
However, the continued investigations into the diversion of funds during his governance have raised significant concerns about transparency and accountability in public office, prompting intensified scrutiny of his financial activities throughout his tenure as a public servant.
