The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has vowed to probe Niger Delta chieftain and ex-militant, Chief Government Ekpemupolo, popularly known as Tompolo for abusing the naira.
The anti-graft agency revealed this on Monday, May 12 following a viral video on X which showed a man throwing N1,000 notes in the air while celebrating Tompolo’s 54th birthday.
The video has sparked widespread debate online, with many Nigerians urging the EFCC to take action against Tompolo to demonstrate its commitment to justice, while others questioned the agency’s impartiality.
This action violates Section 21(3) of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) Act 2007 (as amended), which stated that actions like spraying, stepping on, or dancing on the Naira during social events are considered acts of currency abuse and are punishable by fines, imprisonment, or both.
The EFCC reposted a portion of the viral video on its official social media account on Monday, May 12 morning, declaring that the law applies to everyone equally.
The post read, “Nobody is above the law. Tompolo will have questions to answer!”
