The winners at the just concluded Awa Ibraheem Open Junior Golf Tournament, including Osiregbeme Egbakhume and Grace Agbo, who came tops in the boys and girls’ competitions respectively, have been assured of admission into the Nigerian Sports University, Idumuje-Ugboko, by I-YESS International Golf Academy, as part of efforts to take the sport to the next level. The I-YESS International Golf Academy, based in the United Kingdom, recently entered into an agreement with Awa Ibraheem Junior Open Tournament. As part as the agreement, the academy has pledged to offer the best players of the 2022 tournament admission into its Idumuje-Ugboko, Delta State-based Sports University. It also said it would sponsor players on minor tours of Europe and America to better expose them to the game at the international level. At the Awa tournament, PGA of Nigeria Secretary, Jide Bolaji, who is also the technical director of the Nigeria Golf Federation (NGF), on behalf of I-YESS CEO, Dr. Bob Olukoya, said: “The I-YESS International Golf Academy appreciates what Alhaji Awa Ibraheem has been doing to help the younger generation through golf; we will support and partner with him to grow the game; we will offer scholarship to winners of the tournament in our Sports University at Idumuje-Ugboko, Delta State and also take them on minor tours abroad – UK and the US.” Among the winners expected to benefit from this opportunity include tournament champion and Edo State-born Egbakhume,16, a student of Chrisland International High School, Lagos (Ikoyi Club) and Benue State’s Grace Agbo of IBB Golf and Country Club, Abuja, who won the girls age 15 to 16 category. They are in their final year in secondary school. Winners of 12 to 14 categories, David James of Rayfield Golf Club, Jos, Plateau State (boys) and Christy Obomanu-Assisi (girls), who though are still in the middle of their secondary education, among others at the primary school level, are also expected to benefit from the gesture.
