President of France, Emmanuel Macron was pelted with an egg while he was visiting a restaurant and food trade fair in the southeastern city of Lyon on Monday.
A video of the incident, that has been widely circulated on social media shows Macron walking through the crowd when an egg hit his shoulder, bounces off him and hits the floor without breaking.
Two bodyguards can then be seen immediately getting closer to Macron to protect him.
The video also shows a man being taken away from the scene by other bodyguards.
According to reports from Reuters, the assailant shouted “Vive la revolution” which loosely translates to “long live the revolution.”
Reporters at the scene heard Mr Macron saying: “If he has something to tell me, then he can come,” according to local news agency, AFP.
The details or the motivation of the assailant has not been released to the public as of yet.
This is not the first time the President has been assaulted. Macron was previously targeted with an egg in 2017, when he was a presidential candidate. The egg cracked on his head in that incident.
Earlier this year in June, Macron was also slapped in the face by a man as he was greeting the public in a small town in southeastern France.
He then denounced “violence” and “stupidity,” after the assault.
The slap prompted a wide show of support for France’s head of state from politicians across the ideological spectrum.
Damien Tarel, 28, the perpetrator of the June assault received a four-month prison sentence as well as an additional 14-month suspended sentence for the offence.
Tarel was banned from ever holding a public office and from owning weapons for five years.
Macron’s security detail is expected to be on high alert in coming months as the centrist leader multiplies his public appearances ahead of a widely expected re-election campaign, although he has not expressed a want to be re-elected.
