Dr. Ben Nwoye, the immediate past chairman of the All Progressives Congress, APC, in Enugu State, has announced his resignation from the party.
Nwoye, who made the announcement on Thursday, attributed his decision to the collapse of the party’s leadership structure in the state. He said the internal disunity and absence of coordinated leadership had made it difficult to continue as a member.
Before arriving at the decision, Nwoye revealed that he engaged in wide consultations with his political associates, supporters, and other stakeholders.
Although he confirmed his departure from the APC, Nwoye did not disclose any plans to join another political party at this time.
“The bunch of broom which we painstakingly tired together in 2013 at a time when they were called unprinted names has loosened and permanently scattered,” Nwoye said.
He criticized the APC leadership in the South-East for prioritizing personal vendettas over genuine political progress, accusing them of engaging in vindictive politics. According to him, rather than focusing on expanding the party’s influence beyond the two states it currently governs in the region, the leadership has been more concerned with internal battles and settling scores.
“The leadership of the party in South-East are fully engaged in vindictive politics. They are not interested in adding another State to the two States the party controls in the South-East.
“As far as they are concerned, the supremacy of the party is measured by how low they can go to oppress their perceived political enemies. These they do, without recourse to the core principles upon which APC stands – Justice, Peace and Unity. To say the least, the Zonal leadership in the South East has lost direction.”
He further accused the APC’s national leadership of being complacent, claiming they were basking in the euphoria of power simply because the party produced the President and commands a majority in the National Assembly.
“The APC national leadership has therefore maintained willful blindness. Hence, allowing the warring factions to self-destruct and strangulate the party in Enugu State.
“To worsen the situation, the APC national leadership treats party elders’ calls for reconciliation with disdain and disrespect. Loyal party members calling for party unity are treated like conquered and captured political warriors.
”I engaged in extensive consultations with my grassroots followers and I have come to the conclusion that it is time to move on. I am not a political prisoner. I have never been and I can never be,” he stated.
