Explosions and sporadic gunfire on Friday rocked Maiduguri, the capital of Borno State.

Street Journal gathered that the intensity of the explosions was so heavy that flights could not land at the Maiduguri airport.

As of around 8 am, information reached Street Journal that the University of Maiduguri was under attack from suspected members of the dreaded Boko Haram terrorist organisation. Almost at the same time, another set of terrorists launched an attack on the Giwa Barracks, also in Maiduguri.

Giwa Barracks is one of the strategic military barracks in Borno State and the attack is believed to be in retaliation of the continuous pounding of Boko Haram bases by in Sambisa, Barga and other places in the North East by the military.

The attack started just as residents were preparing to start going to work and the sound of gunfire sent people scampering for safety.

The terrorists are believed to have entered Maiduguri from Bama Road.
