The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) police command has redeployed the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) of Ushafa division after a viral video showed him slapping a young man during a confrontation.
The footage, which emerged on X (formerly twitter) on Wednesday, sparked outrage among users and prompted calls for accountability after the officer was seen hitting the civilian in what appeared to be an unprovoked act.
Confirming the development in a statement, the command’s spokesperson, Josephine Adeh said the commissioner of police, Miller G. Dantawaye describe the action as unacceptable.
“The commissioner of police strongly condemns the officer’s actions, which fall short of the high standards of discipline, civility, and professionalism expected of police officers.
“He emphasizes that such behaviour is unacceptable and will not be tolerated under his leadership.
“Consequently, the officer has been redeployed, and the situation is currently under investigation. All police officers must remain professional, courteous, and law-abiding in the discharge of their duties,” the statement read.
The commissioner reminded members of the public to remain law-abiding and maintain mutual respect during interactions with officers, as cooperation between citizens and the police is vital for effective community policing.
