The Federal Fire Service (FFS) has successfully contained a major fire outbreak at the Adidas store in Jabi lake mall, Abuja, preventing what could have been the destruction of the popular shopping center.
The inferno, which raged for over six hours, was brought under control through the combined efforts of firefighting teams operating appliances FFS 75, FFS 88, and FFS 164, with reinforcement from the Julius Berger fire service.
According to a statement by FFS national public relations officer, P.O. Abraham, the operation, led by crew commander S.F. Agbo, demonstrated professionalism, skill and high-level coordination, ensuring the flames did not spread beyond the affected section of the mall.
“Thanks to the timely intervention of the firefighters, the inferno was confined to the affected section of the mall, averting its spread to adjoining areas.
“Their swift action helped salvage goods worth approximately ₦94 billion from an estimated ₦100 billion pre-incident stock,” the statement read.
FFS controller general, Olumode Adeyemi Samuel, commended the officers for their bravery and dedication, noting that their performance reflects the agency’s commitment to protecting lives and property across Nigeria.
The FFS further advised business owners, facility managers, and the public to adopt preventive fire safety practices such as routine electrical inspections, avoiding overloaded circuits, installing fire detection systems, and keeping emergency exits clear.
The federal capital territory police command public relations officer, Josephine Adeh confirmed that its operatives were deployed to the scene after receiving a distress call around 3:40 a.m. to secure the mall and prevent looting.
“We immediately deployed our men there to secure the place and prevent any breach of public order,” she said.
