The Federal Government has approved ₦19 billion to restart construction on the Kano–Gwarzo–Dayi road, a project that had been abandoned for over three years, according to the Deputy President of the Senate, Senator Barau Jibrin.
Barau announced the development on his verified Facebook page on Friday, noting that the funding aligns with President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, which focuses on delivering quality infrastructure that directly benefits communities nationwide.
The senator explained that the approval followed a meeting with the Deputy Managing Director of CGC Nigeria Limited, Lv Haiming, in Abuja, where outstanding issues surrounding the stalled project were resolved.
“I am pleased to announce that all arrangements have now been finalised, and the sum of ₦19 billion has been approved and awarded for the execution of the Kano–Gwarzo–Dayi road project,” he said.
He added that construction, which had slowed significantly, is set to resume shortly, with the contractor fully mobilised to return to the site.
Barau described the road as a critical link connecting multiple communities in Kano State and neighbouring areas, emphasizing its role in improving movement, accessibility, and economic activity.
“The road is a vital link that will enhance connectivity, boost economic activities, and improve the well-being of our people,” he said, reaffirming his commitment to working with the Tinubu administration to ensure the timely completion of key projects that affect citizens’ lives.
Originally flagged off by the Federal Hovernment on June 11, 2021, the dual carriageway project from Kano to Dayi town in Katsina State was awarded at a cost of ₦62.7 billion but had stalled for over three years.
The road, spanning approximately 100 km, was intended to improve transportation along the axis and facilitate the movement of farm produce from rural areas to markets across neighbouring states.
Frustration over the halted work had previously prompted affected communities to threaten protests at the National Assembly, citing the failure of the former Buhari administration to release funds for the project’s completion.
