The Federal Government has directed the West African Examinations Council, WAEC, and the National Examinations Council, NECO, to transition fully to Computer-Based Testing, CBT, for all examinations by 2026.
Minister of State for Education, Dr. Tunji Alausa, announced the directive on Monday during an inspection of the ongoing examinations, conducted alongside officials of the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board, JAMB, in Bwari, Abuja.
According to Alausa, beginning this November, WAEC and NECO will start administering their objective tests through CBT platforms. The complete migration of both the objective and essay components to computer-based formats is scheduled to take effect by May or June 2026.
The minister noted that more than two million candidates are participating in the ongoing examinations at over 800 centres nationwide, emphasizing the government’s commitment to modernizing Nigeria’s education system through technology.
”If JAMB can successfully conduct CBT exams for more than 2.2 million candidates, WAEC and NECO can do the same.
“We are going to get WAEC and NECO to also start their objective exam on CBT.
“By 2026 exams which will come up in May/June, both the objectives and the essay will be fully on CBT. That is how we can eliminate exam malpractices.”
Alausa also revealed that a committee is currently conducting a nationwide review of examination standards, with its recommendations slated for release next month.
