Lecturers, under the aegis of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), were paid half salaries for the month of October by the federal government.
The federal government only paid them for 18 working days in October.
Lecturers and senior members of ASUU, while speaking on the development on Thursday, November 3, noted that the government only paid half salaries, The Punch reports.
A senior member of the union’s National Executive Council (NEC) said that, “We were only paid for the days after the strike. I received a half salary.
“Other members are angry right now, they are blaming the NEC for calling off the strike.”
Another member, who confirmed the development, said that, “Yes, it is true, I received half salary. It seems the federal government is set to kill unionism in the country but we are ready for them.”
Recall that the lecturers, on February 14, 2022, embarked on industrial action that lasted for eight months over the controversy on the adoption of the Integrated Personnel Payroll Information System (IPPIS) of the federal government as the payment system in the university sector, among other issues.
They also condemned the poor funding of universities, non-payment of salaries and allowances of some of their colleagues, as well as the inability of the government to pay earned academic allowance to lecturers.
However, the union suspended the eight-month-old industrial action on October 14.
