A building of four bedrooms with adjoining ten shops was razed down by fire on Thursday, at Ile Olola Compound, Essa Junction along Olofa Way, Offa Local Government Area of Kwara State.
Sources said that the inferno occurred at approximately 01:35 hours, destroying properties worth N39.6million.
Spokesman of the Kwara State Fire Service, Hassan Adekunle, in Ilorin, explained that the Service responded to distress call distress call from Ile Olola Compound, Essa junction along Olofa way, Offa Local Government Area of Kwara State from a caller identified as Habeeb.
Adekunle said that, “Upon receiving the emergency call, fire fighters promptly responded and turned out swiftly to the reported location.
“The incident involved a building comprising four bedrooms and 10 shops, of which the four bedrooms and three shops were affected by the raging fire.”
He noted that the firemen at the scene of the fire outbreak demonstrated skill and efficiency in containing the fire and preventing its spread to adjacent buildings.
Hassan said added that the firemen succeeded in containing the fire through strategic maneuvers, thereby safeguarding nearby buildings from further damage.
He informed that preliminary investigations conducted by the state fire service indicated that the fire was triggered by a power surge, which ignited the inferno within the building.
He noted that, despite prompt response to the distress call about the fire, some parts of the building still suffered substantial damage.
He said that, out of the four bedrooms and 10 shops, four bedrooms and three shops were significantly raveged, leaving parts of the structure badly damaged and unfit for proper habitation.
The Director of Kwara State Fire Service, Falade John Olumuyiwa, called on property owners in the state to regularly maintain appropriate fire safety measures, including installation of surge protectors, circuit breakers, and fire extinguishers.
He also said that more awareness about fire safety protocols in the state will help contribute to curbing fire emergency and safe the state from incalculable damage.
