Fire guts bus in Lagos, disrupts traffic on Third Mainland Bridge

    A commercial bus caught fire on the Third Mainland Bridge on Tuesday afternoon, disrupting traffic for motorists heading towards the Iyana Oworo axis of Lagos State.

    The incident, which happened in the afternoon near the Adekunle end of the bridge, was confirmed by the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority, LASTMA.

    In updates shared on its official X account, LASTMA said the fire had affected vehicular movement on the busy bridge.

    “A high-capacity bus is on fire on the Third Mainland Bridge, by Adekunle, inwards Iyana Oworo, affecting traffic.

    “Efforts are ongoing to put out the fire, and our officers are on scene managing the traffic situation,” the post read.

    The traffic agency later disclosed that operatives of the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service were deployed to the scene and were working to contain the fire.

    As of the time of reporting, there were no confirmed casualties, while the cause of the fire had yet to be determined.

    The Third Mainland Bridge, which stretches about 11.8 kilometres, is one of the busiest routes in Lagos and frequently experiences congestion due to accidents, vehicle breakdowns, and other unforeseen incidents.
