A fire outbreak on Saturday, January 24, gutted Sapid container terminal, located within Amuwo-Odofin industrial estate, Mile two, Lagos state.
The permanent secretary of the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA), Olufemi Oke-Osanyintolu, confirmed the incident on Sunday, stating that preliminary findings indicated that the fire was fueled by several drums of chemicals and oil stored in a building behind the terminal.
He explained that the LASEMA eagle response team arrived promptly at the scene, and commenced coordinated firefighting operations with the Lagos state fire and rescue service to contain the inferno and prevent it from spreading to nearby facilities.
According to Oke-Osanyintolu, no casualties were recorded due to the timely intervention of emergency responders.
However, he noted that efforts to fully extinguish the fire have been complicated by the presence of highly flammable materials.
The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) said the incident occurred around 9:05 p.m., prompting its officers to immediately notify emergency responders while managing vehicular movement around the affected area.
The agency said traffic control measures were swiftly put in place to protect motorists and pedestrians as firefighters battled the blaze.
Emergency teams remain on the ground as firefighting operations continue, with authorities working to bring the situation under control and ensure public safety in the area.
