A fire engulfed the IC World Emporia Centre, a popular shopping arena in Gwarimpa, Abuja, on Wednesday, January 17.
The intense blaze, captured in a viral video, showcased flames tearing through the building’s roof, leaving a trail of destruction.
Simultaneously, in Agbor, Delta State, a structure succumbed to fire on Tuesday, January 16, with online videos revealing plumes of smoke billowing from the rooftop.
Onlookers gathered to document the incident with their phones. Reports from eyewitnesses on the scene pointed to a fire caused by a generator fueled by cooking gas, with one person mentioning, “Na gas o, dem use gas take on gen.”
A concerning aspect highlighted in the videos was the absence of fire trucks or emergency services, indicating a potential delay in responding to the fire emergency.
In Ikotun, Lagos State, the Fire and Rescue Service faced a different blaze originating from a market, where numerous shops were consumed by flames.
The authorities disclosed that a gas cylinder explosion in one of the shops triggered the fire around 2:10 p.m. on Saturday.
Margaret Adeseye, Director of the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, confirmed the incident, stating, “Shops are on fire at a Market at Council Bus Stop which resulted from leakage of a gas cylinder in use at one of the shops which led to an explosion and spread to several other shops.”
Firefighting efforts involved crews from Ejigbo and Isolo stations, along with personnel from LASEMA, LNSC, and the Nigerian Police Force from the Ikotun Division.
Initial reports suggested possible negligence during gas cylinder refilling as the cause of the fire. While seven shops suffered significant damage to merchandise, there were no reported casualties at the time of this update.
