Operations were crippled at the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport, Nairobi on Wednesday, following a fire outbreak around the international wing of the airport which is the busiest in East Africa. Though the fire which started in the early hours of Wednesday has been brought under control, officials say the airport will be closed indefinitely. Flights have been routed to other airports including Mombasa, Dar-es-Salaam and Entebbe .
The fire raged for about four hours and caused extensive damage to the airport, though no injuries were reported.
President Uhuru Kenyatta was at the scene moments after the fire was subdued and he was briefed about the incident by the officials on ground.
A team headed by Michael Kamau, the Cabinet Secretary for Transport and Infrastructure has been set up to investigate the cause of the fire.
