First Bank of Nigeria and Guaranty Trust Bank (GTB), on Friday, January 27, announced that their branches across the country will operate on Saturday, January 28, and Sunday, January 29, for collection of old naira notes from their customers.
The development comes three days before the January 31 deadline set by the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN).
The bank managements, in a public notice issued to their customers on Friday, said that the planned weekend operation was for receiving old naira notes only, Daily Trust reports.
First bank noted that, “This is to notify the general public that all our branches will be open on Saturday and Sunday just to receive old naira notes.
“All old naira notes of series 200, 500 and 1000 will cease to be in use from the 31st of January.”
Recall that the CBN recently insisted that old notes of N200, N500 and N100 would cease to be in use from January 31.
The governor of the apex bank, Godwin Emefiele, said that the January 31 deadline for the validity of the old N200, N500 and N1,000 notes remains sacrosanct.
He also said that the time given for the swap of the old naira notes with new ones were enough for Nigerians to go to commercial banks and get new notes.
Emefiele’s statement came on the heels of the directive given by the national assembly on Tuesday, January 24.
The national assembly, on Tuesday, directed the CBN to extend the deadline for the withdrawal of old naira notes from circulation until July 2023.
The resolution was passed on the floor of the senate and house of representatives.
