Heavy rain in southern China’s Guangdong province have led to historic flooding and landslides resulting in at least 47 reported deaths, state media reported on Friday, June 21.
It was confirmed on Friday, June 21 that Meizhou city alone accounted for 38 of the fatalities, adding to the nine deaths previously reported in the same city.
In rural parts of Guangdong province, nine people have died and six are missing due to the severe downpours.
Authorities have also issued warnings of potential flooding in other regions of the country.
On Thursday, June 20 four people have died and four are missing in Meixian district of Meizhou city, Guangdong.
Additionally, five people have died in Jiaoling county also located in Meizhou.
The heaviest rainfall from Sunday, June 16 to Tuesday, June 18 resulted in fallen trees and collapsed homes.
A road to Meixian district completely gave way during the downpour. The Songyuan river, running through Meizhou, saw its most severe recorded flood.
Within the next 24 hours, other regions of the country are expected to experience torrential rain and extreme weather conditions, prompting the National Meteorological Center to issue warnings for several southern provinces and specific areas in the north.
Last week, southern Fujian and Guangxi provinces saw landslides and flooding due to heavy rainfall.
In Guangxi, a student tragically lost their life after falling into a swollen river caused by the downpour.
