The embattled former Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), Godwin Emefiele, has been released from Kuje prison after successfully meeting the conditions for his bail.
This information was exclusively confirmed by Umar Abubakar, the spokesperson for the Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS).
According to the spokesperson for the NCoS, Abubakar, he stated that the former CBN governor Emefiele regained his freedom on Friday, December 22, following the fulfillment of the stipulated bail conditions set by the court.
The release comes a month after Justice Hamza Muazu granted Emefiele a N300,000,000 bail on November 22.
Meanwhile, one of the conditions for the bail required that his sureties possess landed properties in the prestigious Maitama District of Abuja.
Emefiele had been remanded in prison until he met the conditions of his bail.
The former CBN governor faced charges brought against him by both the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) and the Nigerian Federal Government, alleging his involvement in a N1,200,000,000 procurement fraud.
It’s worth noting that Emefiele’s release occurs amidst the backdrop of revelations regarding financial misconduct attributed to him, as detailed in the interim report of Jim Obazee, the special investigator tasked with probing the affairs of the Central Bank of Nigeria.
It may recalled that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu initially ordered the suspension of the Central Bank of Nigeria governor.
He was directed to immediately hand over the affairs of his office to the Deputy Governor in charge of Operations Directorate, who will act as the Central Bank Governor pending the conclusion of the investigation and the reforms.
As the legal proceedings unfold, the case continues to attract attention and scrutiny, raising questions about the integrity of financial institutions and key figures within the Nigerian economic landscape.
