The Federal Road Safety Corps, FRSC, has announced plans to introduce a fully digital driver’s licence system through a new contactless biometric capture and on-the-spot printing process.
The initiative aims to eliminate the use of temporary licences and streamline the entire licensing procedure nationwide.
The Corps Marshal, Shehu Mohammed, made this known during the launch of the 2025 Ember Months Public Enlightenment and Sensitisation Campaign on Monday in Abuja.
“We are about to commence the contactless biometric capture with on-spot printing of the licence,” Mohammed said.
He explained that the new technology-driven system marks the beginning of a one-stop digital process for obtaining driver’s licences in Nigeria. According to him, the development will phase out temporary licences and address the long-standing delays and inefficiencies associated with the current licensing procedure.
“This will eliminate temporary licences, thereby signalling the beginning of a digitalised one-stop shop for processing driver’s licences.
“With this development, it is expected that delays and other challenges related to the national driver’s licence will be history,” he stated.
Mohammed added that the initiative reflects the FRSC’s broader commitment to leveraging technology for better service delivery, transparency, and accountability in road safety administration. He emphasised that the Corps remains focused on providing Nigerians with easier and faster access to legitimate driver’s licences.
The FRSC boss also expressed gratitude to the Federal Government for its continuous backing, particularly acknowledging the Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, OSGF, for its support and oversight.
“I wish to put it on record that government support is substantially responsible for the modest achievements of the Federal Road Safety Corps over the years,” he said.
Mohammed appealed to Nigerians to cooperate with the Corps as it continues its mission of promoting safety and reducing road crashes nationwide.
