Less than 24 hours before the Presidential and National Assembly elections, seven people were reportedly killed in armed herder attacks in four communities in Benue State’s Apa, Logo, Guma, and Gwer West Local Government Areas.
According to reports, the attackers also left scores of people injured and displaced.
Timothy Adzuu, the younger brother of Mr. Frank Adzuu, an appointee of the state Governor on Protocol, was among those killed in the recent attacks in Tyulen village, Agasha in Guma council.
The victim was reported to have died in the early hours of Wednesday when armed herders from neighboring Nasarawa State invaded the community, shooting sporadically and chasing people away.
Timothy’s death was confirmed on social media by his elder brother.
According to an eyewitness, the same scenario played out at Ikobi community in Apa LGA, where three people were gunned down by armed herders who stormed the community from neighboring Agagbe community in Gwer West, where the marauders killed two people in their farms before marching into Ikobi and killing three people.
“ mourning from neighboring Agagbe in Gwer West LGA, where we heard they had killed two people in their farms, and when they got to Ikobi, they killed three of our people in their farm,”according to the source. “The attack was unprovoked and must be condemned.”
In Logo LGA, a large number of armed herders were said to have taken over several communities in Ukemberagya of Ukemberagya/Tswarev Council Ward, including Chamber, Mgbapa, and Tse Igbur, where an elderly man was allegedly killed in his farm by the armed herders.
The invasion of the area, which was confirmed by a community leader in the area, was said to have occurred after days of migration of herders from neighboring Nasarawa State, who were said to have taken over farmlands in the ward.
