A gas explosion razed 18 shops on Olusesi Street in the Ifako-Ishaga area of Lagos State on Tuesday, February 13 with no casualties reported.
The blaze, believed to have been triggered by a gas leak from a nearby shop, engulfed multiple electronics stores adjacent to the site of the explosion.
The swift response of the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service helped contain the blaze, preventing it from escalating further and endangering lives.
Eyewitnesses at the scene recounted how the explosion originated from a gas leak emanating from a shop situated along the street.
“Contrary to what people are saying, the leak that caused it happened from a small gas shop not far from Kenzo filling station,” one eyewitness shared.
The ferocity of the explosion sent shockwaves through the neighboring establishments, particularly electronics stores, reducing them to smoldering ruins.
Despite the valiant efforts of the firefighting crews, the precise details surrounding the incident remained elusive, shrouded in the billowing smoke and chaos that enveloped the scene.
Meanwhile, authorities erected barricades to safeguard curious onlookers and prevent them from venturing too close to the still-raging flames.
In a separate incident that unfolded in Kwara state, the serene Government Reservation Area of Ilorin bore witness to a tragic event as the newly constructed High Court complex succumbed to a relentless blaze.
The once-stately structure, which housed vital administrative offices and courtrooms, including the Registry Department and the Litigation Office, fell prey to the voracious flames, leaving behind a trail of devastation.
Reports indicated that the fire erupted early in the morning, around 7:25 a.m., catching many by surprise and prompting a frantic response from local firefighting units.
The cause of the conflagration was traced back to a sudden surge in electricity supply to the vicinity, underscoring the critical importance of robust electrical safety measures in all establishments.
Hassan Adekunle, the Head of Media and Publicity for the state Fire Service, lauded the tireless efforts of the firefighters in battling the blaze and preventing it from spreading further.

Meanwhile, Falade Olumuyiwa, the esteemed Director of the state Fire Service, echoed Adekunle’s sentiments, emphasizing the need for proactive measures to prevent fire outbreaks.
