Ghana end aid deal talks with US over demand for citizens’ personal data

Ghana on Tuesday, April 28, ended talks for a multi-year aid deal with the United States (U.S) after Washington demanded access to citizens’ personal data.

The U.S has been striking new health aid deals across Africa after the administration of U.S president Donald Trump dismantled the long-standing U.S Agency for International Development (USAID) and curtailed the role of Non-governmental organizations (NGOs).

A source close to the West African nation’s government said, “The deal is dead.”

The source noted that Ghana’s negotiating team included health officials, suggesting it may have been partly tied to health, adding that the U.S team became hostile and piled on pressure after Ghana pushed back on the demand for personal data.
