Niger State Governor Mohammed Umaru Bago has presented a N1.3 trillion spending plan for the 2026 fiscal year to the State House of Assembly, describing it as the Budget of Consolidation.
The proposal outlines N270 billion for recurrent obligations and more than N761 billion for capital development, reflecting a strong emphasis on infrastructural and economic expansion.
According to the breakdown, recurrent expenses account for 26.19 percent of the total estimate, while capital investments represent 73.81 percent. The governor noted that the funding framework relies on statutory allocations, VAT proceeds, internally generated revenue, FAAC inflows, grants, capital receipts, and loan facilities.
He said the financial plan is designed to sustain earlier progress while responding to emerging socio-economic pressures.
“The budget will build on past gains while addressing the pressing needs of the present, especially as the state navigates the challenges of a rapidly evolving global economy,” he stated.
The economic sector received the largest share, with more than N510 billion earmarked, while transportation had the smallest allocation at slightly above N1 billion. Bago outlined key focus areas for 2026, including wealth and employment creation, agricultural modernization, stronger healthcare delivery, consolidation of road projects, and completion of ongoing water and electricity interventions.
“In the 2026 fiscal year, government interventions will focus on strategic priority areas such as wealth and job creation, agricultural transformation, strengthening the health sector, road infrastructure consolidation, and completion of inherited water and electricity projects,” the governor noted.
He further highlighted plans for improvements in education, enhanced revenue generation systems, digital upgrades for state media, strengthened security, and deeper development partnerships.
Bago added, “The 2026 Budget is anchored on fiscal discipline, strategic investment, and targeted interventions aimed at expanding economic opportunities for our citizens.”
The governor commended the Speaker, Barr Abdulmalik Sarkindaji, and other lawmakers for their cooperation and urged the Assembly to give timely consideration to the bill to accelerate state-wide development.
