Edo State Governor, Monday Okpebholo, has announced a new minimum wage of N75,000 for workers in the state, up from the previous N70,000.
The governor made the declaration during the May Day celebration at the Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium in Benin City on Thursday, emphasizing his administration’s commitment to improving the living standards of workers.
Okpebholo praised the efforts of Edo workers and highlighted several initiatives already taken to enhance their welfare. These include the conversion of over 1,000 casual workers, including cleaners, to permanent staff, the recruitment of 500 new teachers, and the ongoing review of over 3,000 teachers for possible full employment.
Additionally, the government has hired 450 clinical and non-clinical health workers and regularised 126 contract staff at the Edo State Specialist Hospital.
The governor also revealed that his administration had cleared salary arrears owed to Edo State Polytechnic staff and ensured the proper swearing-in of delayed judicial appointments. He further announced the approval of health insurance coverage for retirees, demonstrating continued support beyond active service.
Reaffirming his administration’s priorities, Governor Okpebholo pledged timely salary and pension payments, continued recruitment, and fair treatment for all Edo workers. He called for renewed dedication as his administration works toward building a better Edo.
In his remarks, Comrade Bernard Egwekhide, Acting Chairman of the Nigeria Labour Congress, NLC, in Edo, commended the governor for exceeding expectations within just six months in office. He acknowledged the administration’s pro-worker stance amid Nigeria’s economic challenges.
The event was attended by top government officials, labour leaders, and workers across the state.
