The Olubadan of Ibadanland, Oba Rashidi Adewolu Ladoja, has remarked that serving as a Governor is less demanding than ruling as a traditional monarch.
He made the comment on Monday while hosting the Oniru of Iru, Lagos State, Oba Wasiu Omogbolahan Lawal, at his Bodija residence in Ibadan.
According to a press statement issued by Adeola Oloko, Media Aide to the Olubadan, and dated December 8, 2025, Oba Ladoja reflected on his experience as a former Governor of Oyo State, noting that government officials possess coercive authority while monarchs do not.
He further observed that unlike government structures, traditional rulers lack a clear funding framework. The monarch emphasized the need for constitutional recognition of traditional institutions due to their proximity to the grassroots.
Oba Ladoja explained that the expectations placed on the Olubadan stool are immense, given its wide jurisdiction, adding: “This is why we think outside the box in order not to let our people with very high expectation down.”
The Olubadan also reminisced fondly about his years in Lagos, particularly on Lagos Island, describing the period as worthwhile.
In his remarks, the Oniru praised the character and leadership of the Olubadan. As a former Lagos State Commissioner, he acknowledged the unique challenges that come with transitioning from public office to traditional authority.
Among those present to welcome the Oniru were Ekarun Balogun, High Chief Sharafadeen Alli, and Agbaakin Olubadan, Chief Teslim Folarin. The Oniru arrived with a delegation of chiefs and aides.
