Gunmen invaded Ilu-Abo community in Akure north local government area of Ondo state on Sunday, January 25, abducting a woman identified as Tomilola Oladehinde and injuring three residents.
Oladehinde was abducted by six armed men at about 8:00 p.m. at the entrance of her residence on Liberty avenue.
Eyewitnesses said the gunmen had earlier trailed a businessman, John Ofuduwa, an iron rod dealer based in the neighbouring Oba-Ile community, to Ilu-Abo before launching the attack.
Ofuduwa was ambushed as he attempted to enter his compound and was shot in the head by the gunmen.
In the process, stray bullets hit two other residents, a woman identified as Victoria and her 11-year-old daughter, who were passing through the area at the time of the attack.
A resident said the woman was abducted to aid the gunmen’s escape from the community.
He added that Ofuduwa was rushed to the Federal Medical Centre in Owo before being referred to a hospital in Ado-Ekiti, while the abducted woman’s whereabouts remain unknown.
Following the attack, residents of Ilu-Abo on Monday staged a protest against repeated attacks in the community, demanding urgent intervention from security agencies and the Ondo state government.
The Ondo state commissioner of police, Adebowale Lawal, visited the community and assured residents that efforts are ongoing to rescue the abducted victim and apprehend those responsible.
